From LA to Williams, AZ

Top is a sketch, I drew at the Union Station main hall, while waiting for the arrival of my train. The Amtrak arrived Williams, Arizona next morning before sun rise. Williams is a little town along Route 66. It doesn't have an enclosed train station. Being a city girl, this is my first time experiencing an outdoor train station, which looks like a bus stop locate in the middle of a forest. Standing in the middle of the woods watching the train leave ... gives me a strange lonely, yet adventurous feeling. The bottom piece, is drawn while taking my morning walk around the hotel.

I found your blog becuase of your "Route 66" comment today. I, too, love that second sketch.

Williams is a funky little town. It was the last town along Route 66 to be bypassed by the interstate (in 1985) and still survives to this day fully as a tourist town.

It's the gateway to the Grand Canyon. And it is one of the more well-maintained tourist-heavy towns along 66.

Presumably you either were going or are going to the Grand Canyon, probably via rail. You'll definitely enjoy the adventure. But on the train ride back to LA, pay attention to the landscapes around you as you ride back. You'll be paralleling Route 66 the whole way. And there is plenty to see.

i was wondering, what do you aim for when you sketch like this? Expressing, contrast, fluidity?

Alina Chau said...

Thank you everyone for your visit and comment.

Mokuu,
Thank you. There is no particular purpose when I sketch these. It purely for fun and enjoyment. Travelling sketches to me, it's like taking photos on a trip, which I usually take a lot too. It's to capture the special moments and feeling of the fun trip. :)
